Alex Murray

Chief Superintendent, West Midlands Police

 

 

Chief Superintendent Alex Murray is Commander of Solihull Local Policing Unit and was previously responsible for policing in Birmingham East. He joined West Midlands Police after graduating from Birmingham University in 1996. He now leads for West Midlands Police on preventing violent extremism and is passionate about involving the community in reducing crime. In 2008 he graduated from Cambridge University with a Masters degree in Criminology.

 

Alex is the founder of the Society of Evidence Based Policing and has introduced randomised control trials into West Midlands Police as a means of understanding what works in reducing harm and providing value for money. He is currently working with the Behavioural Insights Team to test the impact of behavioural science on Criminal Justice outcomes. 

 

In 2014 he received the Superintendent’s award for Excellence in Policing and was recognised by George Mason University’s Centre for Evidence Based Policing. He has also been associate director of the Cambridge Indian Police Service Training Programme and part of the UK National Disaster Victim Identification Team.
