Sam Kass

Food Entrepreneur

 

 

Sam Kass is a Food Entrepreneur, and Former White House Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Nutrition. In 2009, a newly elected President Obama asked Sam to continue his work as personal chef to the family and join the kitchen staff as Assistant Chef, by 2010 he had become Food Initiative Coordinator. In 2012, Kass helped create the American Chef Corps, which is dedicated to promoting diplomacy through culinary initiatives. 

 

During his tenure inside the White House, Kass took on several additional initiatives including roles as Executive Director of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign and senior White House Policy Advisor for Nutrition. As Senior Policy Advisor for Nutrition, he led Administration policy efforts on food and nutrition issues. Kass is the first person to in the history of the White House to have a position in the Executive Office of the President and the Residence. 

 

Kass is one of the First Lady’s longest-serving advisors, having previously served as Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives. Kass helped the First Lady create a major vegetable garden which to date has yielded thousands of pounds of produce that has been used to feed event guests, staff and the First Family at the White House. Further harvests are donated to local food shelters. In addition, Kass helped create the first beer to ever be brewed in the White House.
